Global Land Cover Mapping at 30m Resolution

Global 30m Land Cover Mapping Project was started by MOST of PRC and led by National Geomatics Center of China (NGCC) to meet with the needs of global environmental change studies and earth systems simulation (Jan. 2010 - Dec. 2012). This project aims at producing world’s first 30m resolution land cover data set for the year of 2000 and 2010 with the combination of land resource information and HJ-1 satellite image. This project is led by National Geomatics Center of China (NGCC). 18 institutions from 7 ministries participated in the technology research and data production.

In this program, a wide field angle satellite image geometry model is put forward, with which HJ images worldwide were collected and processed and the corrective accuracy increased from 4 pixels to 2 pixels. Along with Landsat images, global coverage of 30m imagery for 2000 and 2010 basic years were achieved.

A hierarchical classification strategy, in which land cover data will be extracted per type per scene firstly and then be integrated finally, is proposed in this project. During the step of land cover type extraction, automatic classification algorithms using eco-geographical zone data and other reference data, and interactive editing guided by experts knowledge, are combined effectively to achieve high precision data sets.

Common land cover mapping generally focuses on certain region. The Global Land Cover Mapping at 30M Resolution program centers our attention on the global. So the progress and efforts to accomplish this program will gain meaning results.
